Former India spinner Piyush Chawla, a World Cup winner, has applauded skipper Suryakumar Yadav for adjusting his batting strategy and showing greater patience at the start of his innings — a move that appears to have revived his form.
Speaking on JioStar’s show Game Plan, Chawla explained that Suryakumar’s slower starts are deliberate. Ahead of the New Zealand series, there were questions about his consistency after a lean run with the bat. Instead of rushing, the Indian captain chose to settle in before accelerating. According to Chawla, that approach suits a player of Surya’s caliber because he possesses the rare ability to dramatically lift his strike rate within a couple of overs. Even after consuming 30–40 deliveries, he can still finish with a strike rate touching 180.
Chawla also highlighted Suryakumar’s wide scoring range, particularly his mastery of sweep variations. By moving his front foot across, he creates angles to execute the traditional sweep, play it finer behind square, or stand tall and launch the ball over mid-wicket. This versatility makes him extremely difficult for bowlers to contain once he finds rhythm.
The turnaround has been significant. During 2025, Suryakumar struggled in international cricket, managing only 218 runs from 21 matches without a single half-century and averaging 13.62. However, he responded strongly in the subsequent series against the New Zealand national cricket team, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer with 242 runs in five matches at an impressive average of 80.66, including three fifties.
Carrying that momentum into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Suryakumar has continued to deliver. His unbeaten 84 against the United States national cricket team set the tone for India’s campaign. Across three matches so far, he has amassed 128 runs at an average of 64 and a strike rate of 140.65, reaffirming his status as one of T20 cricket’s most dynamic batters.
