By This year just keeps getting better for Ishan Kishan. comeback to international cricket following a gap of two and a half years, the wicketkeeper-batter was one of the chief architects of India’s T20 World Cup win.
Days after lifting the World Cup, Kishan was on Wednesday appointed stand-in captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad until the incumbent captain, Pat Cummins, fully recovers. This marks a dream comeback for Kishan after being sidelined for a long break.
Comebacks are never easy, but Kishan has played as if he never left the international scene. Some of his qualities were highlighted by india cricket coach Gautam Gambhir, who witnessed the Jharkhand cricketer from close quarters as he scripted a fairytale return.
“It’s never easy to make a comeback,“You’re far more nervous when you’re making a comeback than when making a debut. His first ball against Jacob Duffy in Nagpur was smashed for four, and that shows the character of the man. It shows his fearlessness, ability, and character, and how quickly he has adopted a team-first philosophy. Not because of the World Cup he has won, but because of the kind of character he is that’s why Indian cricket is very blessed to have some phenomenal white-ball players like him and Samson.”
SRH had the option of Travis Head, who has led Australia on multiple occasions, as well as Heinrich Klaasen or Indian cricketer Nitish Kumar Reddy. However, the decision to hand the baton to Kishan highlights the trust he has earned through his performances in the recent past. Added to that are his captaincy credentials: Jharkhand won their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy under his leadership, and at Under-19 level, he led India in the World Cup.
Kishan has earned Gambhir’s admiration for his character and team-first mentality.
The Ishan Kishan-led SRH will play the tournament opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on March 28 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru(india).
