By Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Robin Uthappa has hinted at the potential retirement of (Mahendra singh )MS Dhoni, saying that he wants to wean himself out and will do so after the end of the IPL 2026 .
Dhoni’s retirement has long been a topic of discussion, especially since 2020, when he announced his retirement from international cricket. Now 44, Uthappa, a friend and former team-mate, reckons that the veteran wicketkeeper-batter will play more of a “mentor-cum-player” role this year.
“I think you can see Dhoni being a little more hands-off. IPL 2026 is likely to be his last year in the yellow jersey.😭 I see him playing more of a mentor-cum-player role this year. I don’t see him batting at number seven; I see him batting at number eight. Knowing that he is on his way out, he wants to wean himself out. I think he will do that. Only then will we see the true potential of Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain of CSK ,” he said.
Since the inception of the IPL in 2008, Dhoni has taken part in all the seasons. With 5,439 runs to his name in 278 matches, he has been one of the most successful players in the history of the cash-rich league. As a captain, he enjoys a stellar record, having led CSK to five(5) IPL titles.
After he stepped down from the role ahead of the 2024 season, CSK has failed to reach the play-offs in the last two seasons. Ruturaj Gaikwad failed to take his team to the knockouts in 2024. In 2025, although Dhoni led the team for the majority of the tournament, with Gaikwad being ruled out, he could not take his team to the knockouts.
Dhoni is currently with the CSK squad in Chennai. The five-time IPL winners will play their first game of the season against Rajasthan Royals on March 30. Thanks for reading this blog and please subscribe My blog.
