Social Media Heat, 3 Ducks & Huge Pressure – The Real Test for Abhishek Begins!

Abhishek Sharma comeback

All eyes will be on Abhishek Sharma as India face South Africa in Ahmedabad. After three consecutive ducks, the pressure is building on the young opener heading into the Super 8 stage. For any cricketer, repeated failures can slowly turn into a mental challenge. Self-doubt begins to creep in, overthinking takes over, and confidence can dip quickly.

In today’s world, social media only adds to that pressure. Criticism spreads faster than praise, and negativity often becomes louder than support. For a young player, handling that noise can be just as tough as facing world-class bowlers on the field.

This is where Gautam Gambhir’s presence in the dressing room becomes crucial.

Gambhir himself experienced a similar phase during the 2014 IPL season while captaining Kolkata Knight Riders. He went through a rough patch, including three ducks in a row. He later admitted that it was one of the lowest points of his career. Unlike big tournament finals where he felt confident because of prior performances, that phase brought real pressure because his form was under constant scrutiny.

During that slump, Gambhir even experimented with the batting order, promoting Manish Pandey while moving himself down the order. However, the move didn’t work as planned. That moment made him realise an important lesson — never let fear dictate decisions. He returned to opening in the next game, attacked from the very first ball, scored a half-century, and eventually led KKR to an IPL title with multiple strong performances.

That experience makes Gambhir the ideal mentor for Abhishek right now. As head coach and someone who has played a significant role in Abhishek’s rise, Gambhir understands both the technical and emotional sides of the game. More importantly, he has lived through the same situation.

Abhishek needs to remember that even the best players have faced similar struggles. The key is not to panic. If the situation demands patience, he must be willing to play a few dot balls. If it means letting Ishan Kishan take more of the strike early on, that is perfectly fine. Cricket is about the team, not individual ego.

Abhishek is too talented to remain out of form for long. With strong guidance around him and the right mindset, he has every chance of turning things around. The upcoming clash against South Africa could well be the stage for his comeback.

Wishing the young opener strength, clarity, and success as he prepares for this important game.
