Kotak confirmed that discussions are ongoing but stressed that no final decision has been made.

He pointed out that India’s batting line-up had performed consistently well in bilateral series leading up to the tournament. Bowlers targeting outside off-stump lines and early off-spin are expected strategies, and the coaching staff are working with batters to prepare multiple responses. He explained that conversations with players happen during practice sessions, where technical and tactical adjustments can be tried immediately rather than just discussed theoretically.
While the spotlight remains on the fragile top order, team management are equally focused on strengthening the lower order. Kotak emphasised the importance of having batting depth until No. 8 in modern T20 cricket. In high-scoring chases, a capable all-rounder at No. 8 can add crucial runs and build partnerships if the top order falters. That approach suggests bowling all-rounders may be preferred over specialist bowlers to maintain balance.
Kotak also admitted that selection decisions are never easy, as only eleven players can take the field despite the squad’s depth. The final combination, he said, will depend entirely on what balance the team believes is best suited for the conditions and the opposition.
With their campaign at a crossroads, India must now decide whether to back continuity or opt for calculated change. The team sheet in Chennai will reveal whether the management chooses bold correction or steady faith as they attempt to keep their World Cup defence alive.
